HIRING A PHOTOGRAPHER FOR A PROPOSAL

Hiring a photographer for your proposal is such a great way to be able to preserve the emotional and beautiful once-in-a-lifetime moment.  I feel honoured to have been asked to capture such a precious event!

Should I hire a photographer for my proposal?

Personally, I think that you can have a photographer at your proposal regardless of whether you want a small intimate moment or are happy with a large audience and party vibes! Ultimately though, you know yourself and your partner best and so deciding how to propose and if you want to share that moment with a photographer is up to you! It’s important to consider your partner and what they will comfortable with.

A man on one knee proposing to a lady in the middle of Greenwich park, London. The city in seen in the background.
The crowd cheering at the royal observatory in Greenwich, London. They have just seen a successful proposal.
A couple smiling at each other, her hands around his neck, their faces close after thay have just got engaged.
A couple holding hands in a field, she has an engagement ring on her finger.

How does having a photographer at my proposal work?!

If you choose me to photograph the moment, I will treat it with the upmost care (and secrecy!).

First, you need to have a location, time and some dates in mind. Having a few dates to be able to choose from will be helpful just in case the first date is unavailable. Having a location in mind is great but if you don’t have any ideas, I can either provide a few locations or we can work out a place that will compliment you as a couple (e.g. where you had your first date, your partners favourite place).

When taking proposal photos, it’s time to get creative! If your partner loves photographs and you think they would enjoy a couples photoshoot, this is probably one of the easiest ways to have your proposal photographed. You could set up a ‘date day’ and say that you’re treating them to a couples photoshoot. This is also great if you think they will want to be dressed up and have their nails photo ready for that ring shot! If you can, I would suggest lightly encouraging them to get their hair done or if there’s an outfit they love, suggest to them about wearing that. Also getting friends and family involved doesn’t hurt as they may be able to more naturally suggest getting their hair or nails done, etc.

If you want it to be a complete surprise and don’t want them seeing the photographer until after the big question has been made, I will work with you to plan a specific time and location. I’ve previously hid amongst a crowd and pretended to shoot the landscape and on most shoots, I’m getting in amongst the bushes and trees to get that perfect shot! This one takes a bit more creativity and care when it comes to me not being spotted but it can totally be done! Just consider the location and if there are any hiding or blending in spots for the photographer to be.

What happens after I propose?

Having got engaged myself a couple of years ago, I totally understand what it feels like to be proposed to! So, after the big question, I personally like to give you and your partner time and space to process what just happened. It’s a moment with a lot of nerves, emotion and excitement- it’s a lot to take in!  I’ll still be snapping away but I’ll stay at a distance until you and your partner are ready. When I photographed Matt and Annabelle (pictured), they hugged and chatted and I could tell Annabelle was so surprised and elated. Matt turned, pointed and both waved up to my location so I knew Annabelle was being told all about the planning that went in to the proposal and our surprise photoshoot! I gave them a bit more time to take it all in together before getting the thumbs up to go down to meet and congratulate them.

Once I’ve greeted you, after some cheerful chatting and congratulations, I’ll get photographing you as an engaged couple! Depending on the location, we’ll have a walk around and I’ll suggest some different places to shoot. I’ll ask you questions about how you met and general questions about you as a couple as it’s a lovely time to get to know you both. I’ll get some photos of the ring on your finger and a mixture of natural and some guided posed moments. If there’s any thing you’d like to include in your shoot after your engagement, we can totally do that! Matt wanted to have some champagne and so I bought along the glasses and champagne to make sure that it was all top secret and there was no hint of anything happening! I will do my best to help you make this the most magical moment.

If you want the proposal to be just you two but you’re having an after party- consider having a photographer there. Or, having an engagement shoot is a lovely way to honour this moment in your life and celebrate the next big chapter in your life together!

I honestly get so giddy photographing this moment and it’s an honour to be part of this amazing moment. If you think that you and your partner would like a photographer to capture and preserve this milestone, I’d love to hear from you!
